2018 Round 1 Top 6 Finalist

Southcoast Health and Sustainability Alliance

Ending energy poverty with free power from the sun

Southcoast Health and Sustainability Alliance SHASA installs 40kw of solar on social housing in Moruya creating $18,688 in annual savings on electricity bills for low income households.

Electricity prices in the Eurobodalla are amongst the highest in NSW, 30-32c per kWh for residences. Electricity prices have increased 147% in the last 15 years, three times the rate of inflation resulting in 'energy' poverty for low income households.

7.7% of households (117) in Moruya live in Social Housing. SHASA would install 40kw of solar panels on social housing that has roof space suitable for solar (good solar orientation, no shading etc).

Our dream is that everyone, with a suitable roof, should be able to access the multiple benefits of clean, green energy.

Sunsuper’s Dreams for a Better World grant will help up to 20 social housing households in Moruya to reduce their electricity bills by 40-50% enabling them to redirect scarce funds to other household costs. It will also improve their comfort levels as the climate becomes more hostile as they will be able to afford to heat and cool their homes.
