GG’s Flowers and Hampers employs people in Canberra living with disabilities and provides meaningful work, their own income and a sense of purpose.

Business owner, Nip Wijewickrema co-founded GGs at the age of 20 when she noticed there was a lack of meaningful employment opportunities for people with special needs, specifically - her sister Gayana, who has Down Syndrome.

“In Australia there are 4.8 million people living with a disability and of those, 73% are unemployed and welfare dependent,” Nip said.

“Our dream is to help people with a disability live a life of purpose and move from welfare dependency.

“We’re well on our way to spreading joy nation-wide after we won $15,000 in grants from Sunsuper’s Dreams for a Better World 2018 program.

“With this grant we paid off our second vehicle and plan to ramp up our marketing to get the word out about GG’s. The more flowers and hampers we sell, the more people with disabilities we can employ and pay award wages.”

“We currently employ 37 people throughout the year, so at busy times like Valentine’s Day it’s all hands on deck – this week 25 people are busy packing hampers and assembling flowers ready for delivery. But we currently have a wait list of 400 people wanting to join GG’s and we would love to have a shop in every state in Australia."

Sunsuper’s Dreams for a Better World program awards a share of $150,000 in grants each year to not-for-profit organisations and small businesses to improve their local community.

At Sunsuper’s Dreams for a Better World Grand Final on 7 February 2019, Nip pitched her dream for GG’s and won first place for the small business category.
