Dreams for a Better World 2020
In the tenth year of running Sunsuper's Dreams for a Better World we’ve made some changes to our 2020 program to support grassroots causes that will provide long-term benefits to Australian communities. The program will fund initiatives that help tackle big issues impacting Australians in their local areas and help our communities be more sustainable.
17 Sustainable Development Goals
As part of our 2020 program we’re encouraging community groups to think about the part they are playing in a broader, global context.
The UN Sustainable Development Goals are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice.
In 2015, countries around the world – including Australia, committed to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals represent a broad-ranging agenda to ensure the world’s economic, environmental and social sustainability by 2030.
What does this mean for my dream?
To encourage community groups and local businesses to see themselves within this bigger picture, each grant application will now be required to explain how the project meets one or more of the Goals.
These Goals may seem a long way away from your locally focused organisation or project, but the UN very much recognises that these Goals are not going to be achieved without the involvement of everyone around the world. ‘Think Global, Act Local’ underpins the SDG program.
And once you have a look at the SDGs, you will realise that what you are doing will fit into one, or probably more, of the Goals. To encourage you to put yourself into this bigger picture, each grant application will now require you to include how your project meets one or more of the Goals. Once you realise that what you are doing is part of the Sustainable Development Goals, you can also use this to market your program and encourage others to see you in a broader light.
We’ve simplified the program
Australian grassroots charities, not-for-profits, small businesses and social enterprises can still submit their dream for a better world for the chance to receive a share of $150,000 in grants. It'll be up to our judging panels to select finalists from each category and award grants up to $10,000. Not-for-profits selected as finalists will also be invited to take part in the People’s Choice voting campaign to receive up to an additional $10,000.
- All community grant applications close 26 June 2020
- Business grant applications close 31 July 2020
- Only one voting campaign for nine shortlisted not-for-profits will take place in August 2020
