What is The Candlelight Gift?

Ethan Colmer was born with a critical heart condition that meant he had to have lifesaving open-heart surgery at just a few days old. His parents, David and Katherina, spent the first 11 weeks of his life at his bedside dealing with the very real fear their little baby may not make it out of the hospital alive. But having overcome the odds, his loving parents were able to take him home.

However after Ethan’s difficult start to life, David saw a need to support other parents with sick children in hospital and so The Candlelight Gift was born. With the help of community fundraisers and events, the organisation aims to provide support to families through gifts that meet practical needs within the hospital. Their current project is to provide The Children’s Hospital at Westmead with 20 new sofa beds for parents staying with their sick children during their treatment and recovery.

Where does The Candlelight Gift operate?

The Candlelight Gift is focusing on supporting the families of children staying at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

"Imagine if your child is unwell and needs hospitalisation. As a parent you want to be by their side day and night. At Candlelight our dream is that no parent should go through the tough time of caring for a child in hospital alone."
— David Colmer, Founder of The Candlelight Gift and Ethan’s Dad.

How would The Candlelight Gift use a Dreams for a Better World grant?

The grant would go directly to The Children's Hospital at Westmead to purchase new bedside sofa beds for parents and provide the Child Life Therapy Department with resources for parents and children.
