2018 Round 2 Top 3 Finalist

Second Shot

To help end the cycle of homelessness for young Queenslanders through support, training and employment – and a simple cup of coffee.

Second Shot Espresso is a Brisbane-based not-for-profit organisation that aims to tackle homelessness one coffee at a time.

We empower the homeless with skills, a meaningful job and support to get back on their feet. By providing professional training, employment and support, we give our young Team Members an opportunity to have a second shot at life.

Youth homelessness is a problem we all share, and can help address through our daily coffee. Buying a coffee from Second Shot directly impacts the lives of our team members, who currently rely on social welfare for critical support services. Through our training and employment program, we are able to provide this disadvantage segment of the community with opportunities and income to break their cycle of homelessness and reliance on the social service system. Our purpose is to get our team members back on their feet, feeling confident about themselves, in a stable position and on a path to becoming valued members of our community.

Our vans service the Brisbane-region and participate in corporate events, which help us provide shifts and hours for our team members so they can earn an income from the skills they have developed with us. Through their time with us, we also help our team members explore their career ambitions and help them with studies and introductions to potential employers that can help them realise their ambitions.

We currently operate two coffee vans and directly train and employ young homeless people to serve coffee to our customers. Each van can support 10 team members on an annual basis.

To meet demand and help more Queenslanders, a Sunsuper Dreams for a Better World grant will help us set-up an additional van so that we can expand our program to help 30 team members on an annual basis.
