2018 Round 1 Top 3 Finalist

The Compassionate Friends Victoria

Our dream is to educate health professionals and community workers on the realities of grief and insights on how to best support a bereaved parent or family member.

The Compassionate Friends Victoria is a caring and empathetic community to assist grieving parents on their healing journey, helping them to find hope out of tragedy.

Healthcare professionals are often the first point of contact for families who have suffered the trauma of losing a child. This first interaction has the power to help ease someone's pain or create additional, unnecessary trauma.

We would love to know that every person that a grieving parent interacts with, has been educated about the realities of grief and feels confident in knowing how to support the family, helping ease their pain rather than contributing to it.

Support from health professionals is imperative as studies have shown grieving parents are at significantly increased risk of physical ailments and early death:

• Nearly 50% more likely to suffer cardiovascular health problems compared to non-bereaved

• 4 times higher mortality than non-bereaved parents if the child is less than 1 year old

• 2 times more likely to die themselves within 15 years of their child’s death

• Depressive episodes for bereaved parents peak in the early-mid 50’s age range and the risk of suicide is significantly increased.

With a Dreams for a Better World grant The Compassionate Friends Victoria will be able to meet the demand and expand their program to more health professionals around Victoria, so that any parent dealing with the loss of a child can have the support to cope with their grief.
