2017 Round 4 Top 3 Finalist

Happy Tails Domestic Violence Cattery

Every family member affected by domestic violence has somewhere safe to stay, including the furry family members.

Happy Tails Animal Rescue dream is to open a cattery for victims of domestic violence so their pets can be safe while they relocate. We hope that every family member affected by domestic violence has somewhere safe to stay, including the furry family members.

Each year, around 187,000 Australians access homelessness assistance, a majority being from domestic violence backgrounds. This assistance offers temporary housing and shelter when fleeing domestic violence situations. But emergency or temporary accommodation often does not allow for the pets of the family to also stay. Figures show that 25% of Australian women will stay in a violent home where their family pet is present, out of concern for their pets’ welfare. It is hoped that Happy Tails Animal Rescue will be able to assist peoples’ pets when they need to relocate to escape domestic violence. In particular, their cats and kittens, which need a secure space to stay while their families relocate.

Happy Tails Domestic Violence Cattery will help members of the community who are facing a tough time due to domestic violence, they are forced to leave their homes for their own safety, and this often means also losing their beloved pets.

We wish to turn a small shed on one of the Happy Tails properties into a cattery, where it can care for cats and kittens whose families are victims of domestic violence. The cattery would allow the ability to take on these animals with short notice and provide a secure and safe environment for them while their owners find more suitable long term pet-friendly accommodation. Having this cattery would also benefit the many cats Happy Tails Animal Rescue Inc. saves from rural pounds all over the country, by giving them space to safely keep the animals until foster homes can be found.

The Cattery would give people in this situation an opportunity to have their beloved pets cared for while they find pet-friendly accommodation, meaning they have one less thing to worry about at a time that is already extremely stressful. Working with DVConnect, also takes some of the pressure off their staff who are also trying to assist victims of domestic violence house their pets.

Happy Tails Animal Rescue already has the space suitable for this cattery, but would use the Sunsuper Dreams for a Better World grant to purchase the infrastructure such as a small shed/granny flat/self-contained structure which would be fitted out as a cattery. It would require some supplies and infrastructure to ensure a safe, hygienic and enriching environment for the cats whilst in our care, these include: large crates for each cat, litter trays, food dishes, bedding, food, litter, methylated spirits for disinfecting, flea and worm treatment for the cats whilst in car, fans and heaters for the diverse climate conditions, toys, scratching posts and storage containers to keep supplies and food neat, tidy and fresh.
