Care Goondiwindi Disability Accommodation

Providing care and respite for people with disabilities and their families in regional Queensland.

Care Goondiwindi Association provides Goondiwindi and surrounding communities with a range of community services intended to increase the quality of life within the region. All of our services are designed to meet the needs and choices of individual clients and the community.

We are located 220km from the nearest disability accommodation – respite or supported independent living. Adult offspring unable to care for themselves live at home for years, even as their parents age and retire. The care needs vary greatly from mild disability to high level needs (both intellectual and physical).

Care currently has over 25 trained staff, qualified in delivering one on one individual support for people with a disability. In our community we care for children with cerebral palsy, adolescents with permanent muscular dystrophy, adults with Downs syndrome and acquired brain injuries and more.

Care Goondiwindi has purchased a block of land to purpose build three town houses and our dream is to provide families with loved ones with disabilities a place for care and respite.

This part of rural Queensland does not have access to facilities where loved ones can take a break. People in our community are not used to city living and not wanting to travel long distances or leave their community to access this care.

We strive to offer quality services on daily activities. With the construction of these townhouses we aim to maintain this quality and provide the service locally for the community. There will be other benefits to wider community with the building of these houses. We will see economic benefits by engaging local builders and contractors. At least six new jobs will be filled when the service commences, and will bring more families into town to access this local service.

Care Goondiwindi owns the land outright, we have local council approval to commence building and are currently engaging local builders. We currently have concept plans for three townhouses. Due to funding restrictions we aim to do the build in stages. We would like to start with one unit, which will have high needs capability. The Sunsuper Dreams for a Better World grant will contribute to construction and finishing our first unit.
